San Diego Yoga Studio is San Diego’s largest Iyengar Yoga studio. Centrally located in the Bay Park/Clairemont area since 1990, SDYS offers a range of classes and special courses for beginners and advanced students in the style of BKS Iyengar. Iyengar Yoga is for everyone!
Shri BKS Iyengar developed the Iyengar method, and after more than sixty years of practice and study is considered the foremost Yoga teacher in the world. The Iyengar method is precise and integrates alignment, balance, strength, and flexibility in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). By using props such as blocks, bolsters, and straps, Iyengar Yoga becomes achievable to students of all levels and experience and can be practiced by students with health and physical challenges.
Yoga increases vitality, concentration and a sense of well being. The relaxation reached through practice brings one to a more centered space, ready to meet the demands of modern life.

Sounded Breath: Chanting and Asana
We begin our classes by chanting AUM. In Light on Yoga, Mr. Iyengar writes, “According to Sri Vinoba Bhave, the Latin word Omne and the Sanskrit word Aum are both derived from the same root meaning all and both words convey the concepts of omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence.” AUM is powerful. In this workshop, we will talk about and use different chants as “sounded breath” in our asanas to bring a deeper understanding to the poses.
