What is Yoga?
Yoga Is joining into union the body, mind and spirit. It is an ancient Indian system for developing perfect health and a wonderful exercise for the mind and body. The practice of yoga poses helps maintain or restore physiological and mental well-being. The active poses emphasize the balance of strength and flexibility while maintaining correct spinal alignment. Restorative poses create energy and encourage relaxation. All poses promote physical, mental awareness.
About BKS Iyengar and Iyengar Yoga
BKS Iyengar was born in 1918, in India and lived in Pune, India until his death in 2014. He continued to practice Yoga until the day of his death. Mr. Iyengar is known to be the father of modern Yoga and one of the pioneers bringing Yoga to the west. He is the author of several books including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Light on Yoga Sutra, Yoga Path to Holistic Health and Light on Life. Mr. Iyengar has developed a system of Yoga emphasizing alignment.
Mr. Iyengar was a innovator in the use of props such as blankets, blocks, belts, bolsters, chairs and rope wall. To help students to achieve postures safely and completely according to their particular needs.
Iyengar Yoga teaches correct alignment. Many common ailments including back and neck pain, poor digestion, tension, fatigue, arthritis and women’s health issues can be relived by a regular practice of Yoga.

About The BKS Iyengar Association of Southern California
The B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Association of Southern California (IYASC) is a non-profit educational organization that coordinates the activities of Iyengar Yoga in Southern California. It owns and operates the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Institute of Los Angeles (IYILA).
IYASC is an affiliate with the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS), committed to the dissemination and promotion of the art, science and philosophy of Yoga according to the teachings of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. Our local association does much of the behind the scenes work necessary to provide our yoga community with quality instruction and support for a solid practice.
IYASC sponsors quarterly events (free to all members) aimed at sharing information about B.K.S. Iyengar and his work, highlighting topics in Indian culture, and bringing together the community. The association sponsors members’ workshops, parties, movie nights, and other events. It has a lending library of books and videos on the teachings of Iyengar yoga.
